A SMARTER CHOICE FOR SCHOOLS
In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of overweight and obese children and young people in Queensland.

In order to tackle this issue, it is essential that schools play a key role in promoting healthy, active lifestyles for their students.

Healthy eating practices should be encouraged across the whole school environment. Schools should only provide food and drinks from the Green or Amber category to students for activities such as school excursions, camps, class rewards, class parties, fundraising, special occasions and school events.

HEAD LICE
It is recognised that outbreaks of head lice occur from time to time at our school. Part of our health program includes education about, and a general awareness of, head lice. You will be advised if outbreaks occur. To help control head lice, it is reasonable to expect that schools will request parents not to send children with head lice to school until treatment has begun. It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that their children do not attend school with untreated head lice.

Our school has a trained staff member who coordinates the treatment of head lice infestations. Guidelines for treatment are available upon request from this Resource Person. If you require assistance in this area please ask for Alison at the school office.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Queensland Health provides the school with suggested exclusion times for infectious diseases. Details of these exclusions are available in the school information booklet or from the school office.

MEDICATION
All medication, with a letter of authorisation and request, is to be handed in to the Administration Office from where it will be given to the children. A register is kept of dosage and time administered. All medicines are kept in a secure place.
Only prescribed medication is able to be administered. Panadol and headache tablets are unable to be administered.

A student may be responsible for his/her inhaler for asthma with written permission from a parent/guardian and approval of the Principal. It is a danger for students to keep other medications in bags.

SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES / DENTAL CLINIC
A sister from the Department of Health examines referred children in the course of the school year.

A Dental Van visits the school each year. The dental staff organises appointments for dental treatment and general dental health checks of the pupils.
